Live healthy to age gracefully | Brookfield ALF

Who was it who said, “If I’d known I was going to live this long I’d have taken better care of myself”? We all come to agree with the truth of that statement if we live long enough, don’t we? The best time to begin healthy living is when we’re young, but not many of us are ready for it then. So the next best time to begin healthy living is now – whatever the season of life we’re living. Every positive change we make to support good health makes a difference in our overall wellbeing. June is Men’s Health Month, and Brookfield Assisted Living provides these tips for helping men age healthy and happy, whatever our age.

Stay Physically Active

A sedentary life will kill you. Move. Walk. Dance. Team up in a sport. Exercise every day. The health benefits are many. Physical activity helps keep your weight and blood pressure down and your spirits up. It’s good for your body and good for your brain. Regular exercise is good, cheap medicine for aging healthy and happy.

Good Nutrition

A healthy, well-balanced diet is another vital part of healthy, happy living. Plan your meals around low fat proteins and dairy products, fiber, colorful veggies and fruits. Eating right helps improve heart health and makes for happier arteries. A health-smart diet can reduce your risk of a variety of diseases including type 2 diabetes and some cancers. And watch what you drink. Leave off the carbonated beverages, and stay moderate in alcohol use. Maintain proper vitamin and nutrient levels with supplements. Make healthy food choices a regular part of your healthy, happy life.

Watch Your Numbers

Get your weight to a healthy level, and keep it there. And your blood pressure numbers, your blood sugar number, and your cholesterol level. Talk with your doctor to discover your numbers and how to maintain them at healthy levels. Obesity adversely affects many areas of your health, including diabetes, cardiovascular disease, high blood presure and even certain cancers. Regular exercise and a healthy diet will provide you with good ammo in this department. Watch your numbers to stay healthy and happy as you age.

During your annual doctor visits, take advantage of the screenings suggested. Screenings are able to detect diseases in their early stages, when they’re easiest to treat and cure. Don’t miss your routine check-ups and preventive screenings. Stay ahead of serious health issues, and if something starts to bother you physically, call between annual appointments and be seen as soon as possible. Don’t delay. Know all you can know to stay healthy and happy as you age.

Emotional Health

Manage stress levels by staying connected. Stay mentally active with social interaction. Get together with loved ones and friends at the club or at church. Surround yourself with people. Strong social relationships, including a stable marriage, are good medicine for your emotional health and for staying happy as you age. Adjust your attitude by keeping a gratitude journal. Play games. Get outdoors and revel in the beauty. Take a class. The wisest man once said, “A merry heart does good like medicine.”
