4 Invigorating Summer Activities for Seniors

Summertime is here–and so is the extra daylight and warm weather that make this such a special season. For seniors, summer brings a wealth of opportunities to get active, get in shape or just spend time outside. Here are some of our favorite summer activities for seniors.

Enjoy Some Outdoor Swimming

Many seniors have trouble in hot temperatures, especially if they’re taking medications that make their internal temperature erratic. But needing to stay cool shouldn’t keep you inside all summer. An outdoor swimming pool, for instance, is the perfect place to stay cool while still enjoying the sunshine. Swimming will help keep your body temperature stable on hotter days. Swimming is also an ideal exercise for seniors. The buoyancy provided by water relieves pressure on the joints and helps build muscle tone and flexibility. If you choose to swim outside, make sure you bring plenty of sunscreen with an SPF of at least 30.

Visit a Farmer’s Market

Want an easy way to combine exercise, sunshine and healthy eating? A summer farmer’s market is the triple threat. Schedule an outing to your local farmer’s market to peruse the selection of vegetables, fruits, specialties and handmade crafts. You can stock up on produce that will add some color to your fridge and make your meals instantly healthier. It will also give you a chance to explore a new part of the city and get some exercise! Experience An Outdoor Movie

Outdoor movies are a great summertime activity for seniors who want a low-impact activity that allows them to enjoy the great outdoors. Make sure you bring a comfortable chair and plenty of fluids so you can stay hydrated during your movie. Bug spray, snacks and breathable clothing will also make your evening more enjoyable.

Consider Volunteering

For many seniors, summer is the perfect time to start giving back. There are tons of volunteering opportunities for individuals 55 and older. The Senior Corps, for instance, matches seniors with volunteer opportunities near them. Check out Volunteer Match for volunteer opportunities in Arkansas!
